Śrī Sūktam is a Vedic hymn to Śrī, the goddess of fortune and grace, who is identified with Lakṣmī. Its 37 verses open with "Hiraṇyavarṇāṃ Hariṇīṃ" — the golden, radiant goddess — and are recited as an invocation of wealth and auspiciousness.

What is the meaning of Hiranyavarnam?

Born of your austerity, O sun-hued goddess, is the lord of the forest, the bilva tree; may its fruits, by that tapas, drive away my illusions, inner and outer, and all ill fortune.

May the friend of the gods (Kubera) come to me, and Fame together with the jewel; manifest in this realm, may they grant me fame and prosperity.

May we obtain the mind's desire and resolve and the truth of speech; may Śrī and glory rest on me, in cattle and in food.

May the waters bring forth things tender; O Ciklīta, dwell in my home — and settle here the divine mother Śrī in my line.

One who, pure and self-controlled, offers ghee daily and, longing for Śrī, ceaselessly recites her fifteen ṛks — wins her grace.

O giver of horses, of cattle, of wealth, O treasure-rich goddess — take joy in the wealth I offer, and grant me all my desires.

You are the mother of all creatures; grant me sons and grandsons, wealth and grain, elephants, horses, cattle and chariots, and make me long-lived.

Wealth is Agni, wealth is Vāyu, wealth the Sun, wealth the Vasus; Indra and Bṛhaspati are wealth — may Varuṇa too grant wealth.

O Vainateya (Garuḍa), drink the soma; let the slayer of Vṛtra drink the soma — may the soma-rich grant me the soma of wealth.

In those who have earned merit there is no anger, no envy, no greed, no evil thought — the devout should ever recite the Śrī Sūktam.

May the lightnings of the sky's cloud rain down for you, O radiant one; may all seeds sprout — strike down the enemies of the sacred word.

bhagavati harivallabhe manojñe tribhuvanabhūtikari prasīda mahyam ||

O dweller in the lotus, lotus in hand, resplendent with bright garments, fragrance and garlands; O goddess, beloved of Hari, lovely one, bringer of prosperity to the three worlds — be gracious to me.

Verse 32 — விஷ்ணுபத்நீம் க்ஷமாம் தேவீம் மாதவீம்…

விஷ்ணுபத்நீம் க்ஷமாம் தேவீம் மாதவீம் மாதவப்ரியாம் ।
விஷ்ணோஃ ப்ரியஸகீம் தேவீம் நமாம்யச்யுதவல்லபாம் ॥

viṣṇupatnīṃ kṣamāṃ devīṃ mādhavīṃ mādhavapriyām |
viṣṇoḥ priyasakhīṃ devīṃ namāmyacyutavallabhām ||

I bow to the consort of Viṣṇu, the goddess Kṣamā, Mādhavī, dear to Mādhava; the beloved companion of Viṣṇu, the darling of Acyuta.

Verse 33 — மஹாலக்ஷ்மீ ச வித்மஹே விஷ்ணுபத்நீ ச தீமஹி ।…

மஹாலக்ஷ்மீ ச வித்மஹே விஷ்ணுபத்நீ ச தீமஹி ।
தந்நோ லக்ஷ்மீஃ ப்ரசோதயாத் ॥

mahālakṣmī ca vidmahe viṣṇupatnī ca dhīmahi |
tanno lakṣmīḥ pracodayāt ||

We commune with Mahālakṣmī and meditate on the consort of Viṣṇu — may that Lakṣmī impel us. (The Lakṣmī Gāyatrī.)

Verse 34 — ஶ்ரீவர்சஸ்யமாயுஷ்யமாரோக்யமாவிதாத் பவமாநம்…

ஶ்ரீவர்சஸ்யமாயுஷ்யமாரோக்யமாவிதாத் பவமாநம் மஹீயதே ।
தநம் தாந்யம் பஶும் பஹுபுத்ரலாபம் ஶதஸம்வத்ஸரம் தீர்கமாயுஃ ॥

śrīvarcasyamāyuṣyamārogyamāvidhāt pavamānaṃ mahīyate |
dhanaṃ dhānyaṃ paśuṃ bahuputralābhaṃ śatasaṃvatsaraṃ dīrghamāyuḥ ||

May she grant lustre, long life and health, and be exalted through the purifying breath — wealth, grain, cattle, many sons, and a full life of a hundred years.

Verse 35 — ரு'ணரோகாதிதாரித்ர்யபாபக்ஷுதபம்ரு'த்யவஃ ।…

ரு'ணரோகாதிதாரித்ர்யபாபக்ஷுதபம்ரு'த்யவஃ ।
பயஶோகமநஸ்தாபா நஶ்யந்து மம ஸர்வதா ॥

ṛṇarogādidāridryapāpakṣudapamṛtyavaḥ |
bhayaśokamanastāpā naśyantu mama sarvadā ||

May debt, disease and other poverty, sin, hunger and untimely death, fear, grief and anguish of mind be destroyed for me forever.

Verse 36 — ஶ்ரியே ஜாத ஶ்ரிய ஆ நிர்யாய ஶ்ரியம் வயோ…

ஶ்ரியே ஜாத ஶ்ரிய ஆ நிர்யாய ஶ்ரியம் வயோ ஜநித்ரு'ப்யோ ததாது ।
ஶ்ரியம் வஸாநா அம்ரு'தத்வமாயந் பஜந்தி ஸத்யஃ ஸவிதாரம் விதந் ॥

śriye jāta śriya ā niryāya śriyaṃ vayo janitṛbhyo dadhātu |
śriyaṃ vasānā amṛtatvamāyan bhajanti sadyaḥ savitāraṃ vidan ||

Born for Śrī, going forth unto Śrī, may she grant Śrī and vigour to those who beget; robed in Śrī they attained immortality — the devout at once come to know the impeller (Savitṛ).

Verse 37 — ௐ ஶாந்திஃ ஶாந்திஃ ஶாந்திஃ ॥

ௐ ஶாந்திஃ ஶாந்திஃ ஶாந்திஃ ॥

oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||

Oṃ — peace, peace, peace.
