viṣṇuṣaṭpadī
The Ṣaṭpadī (six verses) to Viṣṇu — Ādi Śaṅkaraʼs prayer for refuge.

Verse 2 — अविनयमपनय विष्णो दमय मनः शमय विषयमृगतृष्णां ।

अविनयमपनय विष्णो दमय मनः शमय विषयमृगतृष्णां ।
avinayamapanaya viṣṇo damaya manaḥ śamaya viṣayamṛgatṛṣṇāṃ |
Take away my ill-breeding, O Viṣṇu; subdue my mind; quell the mirage-thirst for sense-objects;

Verse 3 — भूतदयां विस्तारय तारय संसारसागरतः

भूतदयां विस्तारय तारय संसारसागरतः
bhūtadayāṃ vistāraya tāraya saṃsārasāgarataḥ
widen compassion for all beings in me, and carry me across the ocean of birth-and-death.

Verse 4 — दिव्यधुनीमकरन्दे परिमलपरिभोगसच्चिदानन्दे ।

दिव्यधुनीमकरन्दे परिमलपरिभोगसच्चिदानन्दे ।
divyadhunīmakarande parimalaparibhogasaccidānande |
In the nectar of the divine river, in the being-consciousness-bliss savoured as fragrance,

Verse 5 — श्रीपतिपदारविन्दे भवभयखेदच्छिदे वन्दे

श्रीपतिपदारविन्दे भवभयखेदच्छिदे वन्दे
śrīpatipadāravinde bhavabhayakhedacchide vande
at the lotus feet of Lakṣmīʼs Lord, which sever the fear and grief of existence — I bow.

Verse 6 — सत्यपि भेदापगमे नाथ तवाहं न मामकीनस्त्वं ।

सत्यपि भेदापगमे नाथ तवाहं न मामकीनस्त्वं ।
satyapi bhedāpagame nātha tavāhaṃ na māmakīnastvaṃ |
Even when all difference is dissolved, O Lord, I am yours; you are never mine —

Verse 7 — सामुद्रो हि तरङ्गः क्वचन समुद्रो न तारङ्गः

सामुद्रो हि तरङ्गः क्वचन समुद्रो न तारङ्गः
sāmudro hi taraṅgaḥ kvacana samudro na tāraṅgaḥ
for the wave belongs to the sea; nowhere does the sea belong to the wave.

Verse 8 — उद्धृतनग नगभिदनुज दनुजकुलामित्र मित्रशशिदृष्टे ।

उद्धृतनग नगभिदनुज दनुजकुलामित्र मित्रशशिदृष्टे ।
uddhṛtanaga nagabhidanuja danujakulāmitra mitraśaśidṛṣṭe |
O lifter of the mountain, younger brother of Indra, foe of the demon race, whose eyes are the sun and moon,

Verse 9 — दृष्टे भवति प्रभवति न भवति किं भवतिरस्कारः

दृष्टे भवति प्रभवति न भवति किं भवतिरस्कारः
dṛṣṭe bhavati prabhavati na bhavati kiṃ bhavatiraskāraḥ
when you are beheld, does not all the worldʼs scorn cease to prevail?

Verse 10 — मत्स्यादिभिरवतारैरवतारवताऽवता सदा वसुधां ।

मत्स्यादिभिरवतारैरवतारवताऽवता सदा वसुधां ।
matsyādibhiravatārairavatāravatā'vatā sadā vasudhāṃ |
Through your avatars beginning with the Fish, you who descend have ever protected the earth;

Verse 11 — परमेश्वर परिपाल्यो भवता भवतापभीतोऽहं

परमेश्वर परिपाल्यो भवता भवतापभीतोऽहं
parameśvara paripālyo bhavatā bhavatāpabhīto'haṃ
O Supreme Lord, I, terrified by lifeʼs anguish, am one for you to protect.

Verse 12 — दामोदर गुणमन्दिर सुन्दरवदनारविन्द गोविन्द ।

दामोदर गुणमन्दिर सुन्दरवदनारविन्द गोविन्द ।
dāmodara guṇamandira sundaravadanāravinda govinda |
O Dāmodara, temple of all virtues, O lotus-faced, beautiful Govinda,

Verse 13 — भवजलधिमथनमन्दर परमं दरमपनय त्वं मे

भवजलधिमथनमन्दर परमं दरमपनय त्वं मे
bhavajaladhimathanamandara paramaṃ daramapanaya tvaṃ me
O Mandara that churns the ocean of existence, take away my deepest fear.

Verse 14 — नारायण करुणामय शरणं करवाणि तावकौ चरणौ ।

नारायण करुणामय शरणं करवाणि तावकौ चरणौ ।
nārāyaṇa karuṇāmaya śaraṇaṃ karavāṇi tāvakau caraṇau |
O compassionate Nārāyaṇa, I take refuge — I clasp your two feet.
