Verse 1 — श्रीमद्-वादिराजस्य हितोपदेशः अथवा पञ्चश्लोकी

श्रीमद्-वादिराजस्य हितोपदेशः अथवा पञ्चश्लोकी

śrīmad-vādirājasya hitopadeśaḥ athavā pañcaślokī

This is the Hitopadesha (beneficial instruction), also called Panchashloki (five verses), by Sri Vadiraja.

Verse 2 — स्मर कृष्णं भज हरिं नम विष्णुं श्रयाच्युतम् ।…

स्मर कृष्णं भज हरिं नम विष्णुं श्रयाच्युतम् ।
त्यज कां जहि क्रोधं जहि मोहं भवालयम् ॥ १ ॥

smara kṛṣṇaṃ bhaja hariṃ nama viṣṇuṃ śrayācyutam |
tyaja kāṃ jahi krodhaṃ jahi mohaṃ bhavālayam || 1 ||

Remember Krishna, worship Hari, bow to Vishnu, seek refuge in Achyuta. Abandon desire, conquer anger, destroy delusion — that is the cycle of worldly existence.

Verse 3 — शृणु शौरिकथाः पुण्याः पश्य श्रीपतिविग्रहम् ।…

शृणु शौरिकथाः पुण्याः पश्य श्रीपतिविग्रहम् ।
जिघ्र श्रीपादतुलसीं स्पृश वैकुण्ठवल्लभम् ॥ २ ॥

śṛṇu śaurikathāḥ puṇyāḥ paśya śrīpativigraham |
jighra śrīpādatulasīṃ spṛśa vaikuṇṭhavallabham || 2 ||

Listen to the sacred stories of Shauri (Krishna), behold the divine form of the Lord of Shri. Smell the tulsi from His sacred feet, touch the beloved of Vaikuntha.

Verse 4 — भुङ्क्ष्व केशवनैवेद्यं तिष्ठ माधवमन्दिरे ।…

भुङ्क्ष्व केशवनैवेद्यं तिष्ठ माधवमन्दिरे ।
जपन्नारायणमनुं पठ तन्नाममङ्गलम् ॥ ३ ॥

bhuṅkṣva keśavanaivedyaṃ tiṣṭha mādhavamandire |
japannārāyaṇamanuṃ paṭha tannāmamaṅgalam || 3 ||

Partake of Keśava's offering, dwell in the temple of Madhava. Chant the mantra of Nārāyaṇa, read His auspicious names.

Verse 5 — पाहि प्रपन्नजनतां ब्रूहि तथ्यं हितं नृणाम् ।…

पाहि प्रपन्नजनतां ब्रूहि तथ्यं हितं नृणाम् ।
देहि काङ्क्षितं अर्थिभ्यो याहि सज्जनसङ्गतिम् ॥ ४ ॥

pāhi prapannajanatāṃ brūhi tathyaṃ hitaṃ nṛṇām |
dehi kāṅkṣitaṃ arthibhyo yāhi sajjanasaṅgatim || 4 ||

Protect the surrendered, speak the truth that benefits mankind. Give what is sought by the needy, seek the company of the good.

Verse 6 — कुरु भूतदयं नित्यं चर धर्ममहर्निशम् । जानीहि…

कुरु भूतदयं नित्यं चर धर्ममहर्निशम् ।
जानीहि नित्यमात्मानं अवेह्यन्यद्धि नश्वरम् ॥ ५ ॥

kuru bhūtadayaṃ nityaṃ cara dharmamaharniśam |
jānīhi nityamātmānaṃ avehyanyaddhi naśvaram || 5 ||

Practice compassion to all beings daily, follow dharma day and night. Always know your own Self — everything else is perishable.

Verse 7 — पञ्चश्लोकीमिमां शश्वत् पठ धारय चिन्तय । एतावान्…

पञ्चश्लोकीमिमां शश्वत् पठ धारय चिन्तय ।
एतावान् सर्ववेदार्थः समासेन निरूपितः ॥ ६ ॥

pañcaślokīmimāṃ śaśvat paṭha dhāraya cintaya |
etāvān sarvavedārthaḥ samāsena nirūpitaḥ || 6 ||
