Śrī Sūktam — the Vedic hymn (a khila of the Ṛgveda) invoking Lakṣmī, goddess of prosperity, into the seeker's home and life.

O Jātavedas (Agni), summon for me Lakṣmī — gold-hued, deer-like, garlanded in silver and gold, moon-bright and golden.

तां म आवह जातवेदो लक्ष्मीमनपगामिनीम् ।

yasyāṃ hiraṇyaṃ vindeyaṃ gāmaśvaṃ puruṣānaham ||
Summon for me, O Jātavedas, that Lakṣmī who never departs, through whom I may win gold, cattle, horses and offspring.

श्रियं देवीमुपह्वये श्रीर्मा देवीर्जुषताम् ॥
aśvapūrvāṃ rathamadhyāṃ hastinādaprabodhinīm |
śriyaṃ devīmupahvaye śrīrmā devīrjuṣatām ||
I invoke the goddess Śrī — heralded by horses, a chariot at her centre, awakened by the trumpeting of elephants; may the goddess Śrī take delight in me.

Verse 5 — कां सोस्मितां हिरण्यप्राकारामार्द्रां ज्वलन्तीं…

कां सोस्मितां हिरण्यप्राकारामार्द्रां ज्वलन्तीं तृप्तां तर्पयन्तीम् ।
पद्मे स्थितां पद्मवर्णां तामिहोपह्वये श्रियम् ॥
kāṃ sosmitāṃ hiraṇyaprākārāmārdrāṃ jvalantīṃ tṛptāṃ tarpayantīm |
padme sthitāṃ padmavarṇāṃ tāmihopahvaye śriyam ||
Her I invoke here — Śrī, softly smiling, ringed with gold, tender, blazing, contented and contenting others, seated on a lotus and lotus-hued.

Verse 6 — चन्द्रां प्रभासां यशसा ज्वलन्तीं श्रियं लोके…

चन्द्रां प्रभासां यशसा ज्वलन्तीं श्रियं लोके देवजुष्टामुदाराम् ।
तां पद्मिनीमीं शरणमहं प्रपद्येऽलक्ष्मीर्मे नश्यतां त्वां वृणे ॥
candrāṃ prabhāsāṃ yaśasā jvalantīṃ śriyaṃ loke devajuṣṭāmudārām |
tāṃ padminīmīṃ śaraṇamahaṃ prapadye'lakṣmīrme naśyatāṃ tvāṃ vṛṇe ||
I take refuge in her — moon-like, luminous, blazing with glory, noble Śrī whom the gods honour in the world, the lotus-dweller; may my misfortune perish. You I choose.

Verse 7 — आदित्यवर्णे तपसोऽधिजातो वनस्पतिस्तव वृक्षोऽथ…

आदित्यवर्णे तपसोऽधिजातो वनस्पतिस्तव वृक्षोऽथ बिल्वः ।
तस्य फलानि तपसा नुदन्तु मायान्तरायाश्च बाह्या अलक्ष्मीः ॥
ādityavarṇe tapaso'dhijāto vanaspatistava vṛkṣo'tha bilvaḥ |
tasya phalāni tapasā nudantu māyāntarāyāśca bāhyā alakṣmīḥ ||
Born of your austerity, O sun-hued goddess, is the lord of the forest, the bilva tree; may its fruits, by that tapas, drive away my illusions, inner and outer, and all ill fortune.

Verse 8 — उपैतु मां देवसखः कीर्तिश्च मणिना सह ।…

उपैतु मां देवसखः कीर्तिश्च मणिना सह ।
प्रादुर्भूतोऽस्मि राष्ट्रेऽस्मिन् कीर्तिमृद्धिं ददातु मे ॥
upaitu māṃ devasakhaḥ kīrtiśca maṇinā saha |
prādurbhūto'smi rāṣṭre'smin kīrtimṛddhiṃ dadātu me ||
May the friend of the gods (Kubera) come to me, and Fame together with the jewel; manifest in this realm, may they grant me fame and prosperity.

Verse 9 — क्षुत्पिपासामलां ज्येष्ठामलक्ष्मीं नाशयाम्यहम्…

क्षुत्पिपासामलां ज्येष्ठामलक्ष्मीं नाशयाम्यहम् ।
अभूतिमसमृद्धिं च सर्वां निर्णुद मे गृहात् ॥
kṣutpipāsāmalāṃ jyeṣṭhāmalakṣmīṃ nāśayāmyaham |
abhūtimasamṛddhiṃ ca sarvāṃ nirṇuda me gṛhāt ||
I banish the elder Alakṣmī — hunger, thirst and grime; drive from my home, O goddess, all want and ruin.

Verse 10 — गन्धद्वारां दुराधर्षां नित्यपुष्टां करीषिणीम् ।…

गन्धद्वारां दुराधर्षां नित्यपुष्टां करीषिणीम् ।
ईश्वरीं सर्वभूतानां तामिहोपह्वये श्रियम् ॥
gandhadvārāṃ durādharṣāṃ nityapuṣṭāṃ karīṣiṇīm |
īśvarīṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ tāmihopahvaye śriyam ||
I invoke here Śrī — fragrant, unassailable, ever full, rich in abundance, sovereign mistress of all beings.

Verse 11 — मनसः काममाकूतिं वाचः सत्यमशीमहि । पशूनां…

मनसः काममाकूतिं वाचः सत्यमशीमहि ।
पशूनां रूपमन्नस्य मयि श्रीः श्रयतां यशः ॥
manasaḥ kāmamākūtiṃ vācaḥ satyamaśīmahi |
paśūnāṃ rūpamannasya mayi śrīḥ śrayatāṃ yaśaḥ ||
May we obtain the mind's desire and resolve and the truth of speech; may Śrī and glory rest on me, in cattle and in food.

कर्दमेन प्रजाभूता मयि सम्भव कर्दम ।
श्रियं वासय मे कुले मातरं पद्ममालिनीम् ॥
kardamena prajābhūtā mayi sambhava kardama |
śriyaṃ vāsaya me kule mātaraṃ padmamālinīm ||
Through Kardama was progeny born; O Kardama, arise in me — settle Śrī, the lotus-garlanded mother, in my line.

आपः सृजन्तु स्निग्धानि चिक्लीत वस मे गृहे ।
नि च देवीं मातरं श्रियं वासय मे कुले ॥
āpaḥ sṛjantu snigdhāni ciklīta vasa me gṛhe |
ni ca devīṃ mātaraṃ śriyaṃ vāsaya me kule ||
May the waters bring forth things tender; O Ciklīta, dwell in my home — and settle here the divine mother Śrī in my line.

यस्यां हिरण्यं प्रभूतं गावो दास्योऽश्वान् विन्देयं पुरुषानहम् ॥

yasyāṃ hiraṇyaṃ prabhūtaṃ gāvo dāsyo'śvān vindeyaṃ puruṣānaham ||
Summon for me, O Jātavedas, that unfailing Lakṣmī through whom I may win abundant gold, cattle, servants, horses and offspring.

Verse 17 — यः शुचिः प्रयतो भूत्वा जुहुयादाज्यमन्वहम् ।…

यः शुचिः प्रयतो भूत्वा जुहुयादाज्यमन्वहम् ।
श्रियः पञ्चदशर्चं च श्रीकामः सततं जपेत् ॥
yaḥ śuciḥ prayato bhūtvā juhuyādājyamanvaham |
śriyaḥ pañcadaśarcaṃ ca śrīkāmaḥ satataṃ japet ||
One who, pure and self-controlled, offers ghee daily and, longing for Śrī, ceaselessly recites her fifteen ṛks — wins her grace.

tvaṃ māṃ bhajasva padmākṣi yena saukhyaṃ labhāmyaham ||
O lotus-faced, lotus-thighed, lotus-eyed, lotus-born — receive me, O lotus-eyed one, that I may find happiness.

अश्वदायी गोदायी धनदायी महाधने ।
धनं मे जुषतां देवि सर्वकामांश्च देहि मे ॥
aśvadāyī godāyī dhanadāyī mahādhane |
dhanaṃ me juṣatāṃ devi sarvakāmāṃśca dehi me ||
O giver of horses, of cattle, of wealth, O treasure-rich goddess — take joy in the wealth I offer, and grant me all my desires.

Verse 20 — पुत्रपौत्रं धनं धान्यं हस्त्यश्वादिगवे रथम् ।…

पुत्रपौत्रं धनं धान्यं हस्त्यश्वादिगवे रथम् ।
प्रजानां भवसि माता आयुष्मन्तं करोतु माम् ॥
putrapautraṃ dhanaṃ dhānyaṃ hastyaśvādigave ratham |
prajānāṃ bhavasi mātā āyuṣmantaṃ karotu mām ||
You are the mother of all creatures; grant me sons and grandsons, wealth and grain, elephants, horses, cattle and chariots, and make me long-lived.

Verse 21 — धनमग्निर्धनं वायुर्धनं सूर्यो धनं वसुः ।…

धनमग्निर्धनं वायुर्धनं सूर्यो धनं वसुः ।
धनमिन्द्रो बृहस्पतिर्वरुणं धनमश्नुते ॥
dhanamagnirdhanaṃ vāyurdhanaṃ sūryo dhanaṃ vasuḥ |
dhanamindro bṛhaspatirvaruṇaṃ dhanamaśnute ||
Wealth is Agni, wealth is Vāyu, wealth the Sun, wealth the Vasus; Indra and Bṛhaspati are wealth — may Varuṇa too grant wealth.

Verse 22 — वैनतेय सोमं पिब सोमं पिबतु वृत्रहा । सोमं धनस्य…

वैनतेय सोमं पिब सोमं पिबतु वृत्रहा ।
सोमं धनस्य सोमिनो मह्यं ददातु सोमिनः ॥
vainateya somaṃ piba somaṃ pibatu vṛtrahā |
somaṃ dhanasya somino mahyaṃ dadātu sominaḥ ||
O Vainateya (Garuḍa), drink the soma; let the slayer of Vṛtra drink the soma — may the soma-rich grant me the soma of wealth.

Verse 23 — न क्रोधो न च मात्सर्यं न लोभो नाशुभा मतिः ।…

न क्रोधो न च मात्सर्यं न लोभो नाशुभा मतिः ।
भवन्ति कृतपुण्यानां भक्तानां श्रीसूक्तं जपेत्सदा ॥
na krodho na ca mātsaryaṃ na lobho nāśubhā matiḥ |
bhavanti kṛtapuṇyānāṃ bhaktānāṃ śrīsūktaṃ japetsadā ||
In those who have earned merit there is no anger, no envy, no greed, no evil thought — the devout should ever recite the Śrī Sūktam.

Verse 24 — वर्षन्तु ते विभावरि दिवो अभ्रस्य विद्युतः ।…

वर्षन्तु ते विभावरि दिवो अभ्रस्य विद्युतः ।
रोहन्तु सर्वबीजान्यव ब्रह्म द्विषो जहि ॥
varṣantu te vibhāvari divo abhrasya vidyutaḥ |
rohantu sarvabījānyava brahma dviṣo jahi ||
May the lightnings of the sky's cloud rain down for you, O radiant one; may all seeds sprout — strike down the enemies of the sacred word.

पद्मप्रिये पद्मिनि पद्महस्ते पद्मालये पद्मदलायताक्षि ।

viśvapriye viṣṇumano'nukūle tvatpādapadmaṃ mayi sannidhatsva ||
O beloved of the lotus, lotus-dweller, lotus-handed, lotus-abode, petal-eyed; beloved of all, pleasing to Viṣṇu's heart — set your lotus feet upon me.

या सा पद्मासनस्था विपुलकटितटी पद्मपत्रायताक्षी गम्भीरावर्तनाभिः स्तनभरनमिता शुभ्रवस्त्रोत्तरीया ।
लक्ष्मीर्दिव्यैर्गजेन्द्रैर्मणिगणखचितैः स्नापिता हेमकुम्भैः नित्यं सा पद्महस्ता मम वसतु गृहे सर्वमाङ्गल्ययुक्ता ॥
yā sā padmāsanasthā vipulakaṭitaṭī padmapatrāyatākṣī gambhīrāvartanābhiḥ stanabharanamitā śubhravastrottarīyā |
lakṣmīrdivyairgajendrairmaṇigaṇakhacitaiḥ snāpitā hemakumbhaiḥ nityaṃ sā padmahastā mama vasatu gṛhe sarvamāṅgalyayuktā ||
May she who is seated on the lotus — broad of hip, wide-eyed as lotus petals, deep of navel, bowed by the fullness of her breasts, robed in white, bathed by lordly elephants from jewelled golden pitchers — Lakṣmī, lotus in hand, full of all auspiciousness, ever dwell in my home.

लक्ष्मीं क्षीरसमुद्रराजतनयां श्रीरङ्गधामेश्वरीं दासीभूतसमस्तदेववनितां लोकैकदीपाङ्कुराम् ।
श्रीमन्मन्दकटाक्षलब्धविभवब्रह्मेन्द्रगङ्गाधरां त्वां त्रैलोक्यकुटुम्बिनीं सरसिजां वन्दे मुकुन्दप्रियाम् ॥
lakṣmīṃ kṣīrasamudrarājatanayāṃ śrīraṅgadhāmeśvarīṃ dāsībhūtasamastadevavanitāṃ lokaikadīpāṅkurām |
śrīmanmandakaṭākṣalabdhavibhavabrahmendragaṅgādharāṃ tvāṃ trailokyakuṭumbinīṃ sarasijāṃ vande mukundapriyām ||
I bow to Lakṣmī — daughter of the ocean of milk, sovereign of Śrīraṅga's abode, served by all the consorts of the gods, the one lamp-flame of the worlds; by whose gracious sidelong glance Brahmā, Indra and Gaṅgā-bearing Śiva won their glory — family-mother of the three worlds, lotus-born, beloved of Mukunda.

siddhalakṣmīrmokṣalakṣmīrjayalakṣmīḥ sarasvatī |
śrīlakṣmīrvaralakṣmīśca prasannā mama sarvadā ||
Siddha-Lakṣmī, Mokṣa-Lakṣmī, Jaya-Lakṣmī and Sarasvatī, Śrī-Lakṣmī and Vara-Lakṣmī — may they be ever gracious to me.

Verse 29 — वराङ्कुशौ पाशमभीतिमुद्रां करैर्वहन्तीं…

वराङ्कुशौ पाशमभीतिमुद्रां करैर्वहन्तीं कमलासनस्थाम् ।
बालार्ककोटिप्रतिभां त्रिणेत्रां भजेऽहमाद्यां जगदीश्वरीं ताम् ॥
varāṅkuśau pāśamabhītimudrāṃ karairvahantīṃ kamalāsanasthām |
bālārkakoṭipratibhāṃ triṇetrāṃ bhaje'hamādyāṃ jagadīśvarīṃ tām ||
I worship her — bearing in her hands the boon and the goad, the noose and the gesture of fearlessness, seated on the lotus, radiant as a million dawn-suns, three-eyed — the primordial mistress of the universe.

Verse 30 — सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके । शरण्ये…

सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके ।
शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके देवि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते ॥
sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalye śive sarvārthasādhike |
śaraṇye tryambake devi nārāyaṇi namo'stu te ||
O all-auspicious of the auspicious, benign one, accomplisher of every aim; O refuge, three-eyed goddess, O Nārāyaṇī — salutations to you.

Verse 31 — सरसिजनिलये सरोजहस्ते धवलतरांशुकगन्धमाल्यशोभे ।…

सरसिजनिलये सरोजहस्ते धवलतरांशुकगन्धमाल्यशोभे ।
भगवति हरिवल्लभे मनोज्ञे त्रिभुवनभूतिकरि प्रसीद मह्यम् ॥
sarasijanilaye sarojahaste dhavalatarāṃśukagandhamālyaśobhe |
bhagavati harivallabhe manojñe tribhuvanabhūtikari prasīda mahyam ||
O dweller in the lotus, lotus in hand, resplendent with bright garments, fragrance and garlands; O goddess, beloved of Hari, lovely one, bringer of prosperity to the three worlds — be gracious to me.

Verse 32 — विष्णुपत्नीं क्षमां देवीं माधवीं माधवप्रियाम् ।…

विष्णुपत्नीं क्षमां देवीं माधवीं माधवप्रियाम् ।
विष्णोः प्रियसखीं देवीं नमाम्यच्युतवल्लभाम् ॥
viṣṇupatnīṃ kṣamāṃ devīṃ mādhavīṃ mādhavapriyām |
viṣṇoḥ priyasakhīṃ devīṃ namāmyacyutavallabhām ||
I bow to the consort of Viṣṇu, the goddess Kṣamā, Mādhavī, dear to Mādhava; the beloved companion of Viṣṇu, the darling of Acyuta.

Verse 33 — महालक्ष्मी च विद्महे विष्णुपत्नी च धीमहि ।…

महालक्ष्मी च विद्महे विष्णुपत्नी च धीमहि ।
तन्नो लक्ष्मीः प्रचोदयात् ॥
mahālakṣmī ca vidmahe viṣṇupatnī ca dhīmahi |
tanno lakṣmīḥ pracodayāt ||
We commune with Mahālakṣmī and meditate on the consort of Viṣṇu — may that Lakṣmī impel us. (The Lakṣmī Gāyatrī.)

Verse 34 — श्रीवर्चस्यमायुष्यमारोग्यमाविधात् पवमानं महीयते…

श्रीवर्चस्यमायुष्यमारोग्यमाविधात् पवमानं महीयते ।
धनं धान्यं पशुं बहुपुत्रलाभं शतसंवत्सरं दीर्घमायुः ॥
śrīvarcasyamāyuṣyamārogyamāvidhāt pavamānaṃ mahīyate |
dhanaṃ dhānyaṃ paśuṃ bahuputralābhaṃ śatasaṃvatsaraṃ dīrghamāyuḥ ||
May she grant lustre, long life and health, and be exalted through the purifying breath — wealth, grain, cattle, many sons, and a full life of a hundred years.

Verse 35 — ऋणरोगादिदारिद्र्यपापक्षुदपमृत्यवः ।…

ऋणरोगादिदारिद्र्यपापक्षुदपमृत्यवः ।
भयशोकमनस्तापा नश्यन्तु मम सर्वदा ॥
ṛṇarogādidāridryapāpakṣudapamṛtyavaḥ |
bhayaśokamanastāpā naśyantu mama sarvadā ||
May debt, disease and other poverty, sin, hunger and untimely death, fear, grief and anguish of mind be destroyed for me forever.

Verse 36 — श्रिये जात श्रिय आ निर्याय श्रियं वयो जनितृभ्यो…

श्रिये जात श्रिय आ निर्याय श्रियं वयो जनितृभ्यो दधातु ।
श्रियं वसाना अमृतत्वमायन् भजन्ति सद्यः सवितारं विदन् ॥
śriye jāta śriya ā niryāya śriyaṃ vayo janitṛbhyo dadhātu |
śriyaṃ vasānā amṛtatvamāyan bhajanti sadyaḥ savitāraṃ vidan ||
Born for Śrī, going forth unto Śrī, may she grant Śrī and vigour to those who beget; robed in Śrī they attained immortality — the devout at once come to know the impeller (Savitṛ).
