śrīrāmacandraprītyarthe rāmarakṣāstotrajape viniyogaḥ ||
The ritual declaration (viniyoga): for this Rāma Rakṣā Stotra mantra — the seer is Budha Kauśika; the deity is Śrī Sītā-Rāmacandra; the metre is Anuṣṭubh; the power is Sītā; the nail-pin is Śrīmad Hanumān; and the japa of the Rāma Rakṣā Stotra is enjoined for the sake of pleasing Śrī Rāmacandra.

Verse 3 — அத த்யாநம் । த்யாயேதாஜாநுபாஹும் த்ரு'தஶரதநுஷம்…

அத த்யாநம் ।
த்யாயேதாஜாநுபாஹும் த்ரு'தஶரதநுஷம் பத்தபத்மாஸநஸ்தம் பீதம் வாஸோ வஸாநம் நவகமலதலஸ்பர்திநேத்ரம் ப்ரஸந்நம் ।
வாமாங்காரூட ஸீதாமுககமலமிலல்லோசநம் நீரதாபம் நாநாலங்காரதீப்தம் தததமுருஜடாமண்டநம் ராமசந்த்ரம் ॥
atha dhyānam |
dhyāyedājānubāhuṃ dhṛtaśaradhanuṣaṃ baddhapadmāsanasthaṃ pītaṃ vāso vasānaṃ navakamaladalaspardhinetraṃ prasannam |
vāmāṅkārūḍha sītāmukhakamalamilallocanaṃ nīradābhaṃ nānālaṅkāradīptaṃ dadhatamurujaṭāmaṇḍanaṃ rāmacandram ||
Now the meditation (dhyānam): one should meditate on Rāmacandra — long-armed reaching the knees, holding bow and arrows, seated in the lotus posture, wearing yellow garments, his eyes rivalling the petals of a fresh lotus, serene; Sītā seated on his left thigh, her lotus-like face turned to his eyes; cloud-hued, radiant with countless ornaments, crowned with a mass of matted locks.

சரிதம் ரகுநாதஸ்ய ஶதகோடி ப்ரவிஸ்தரம் ।
ஏகைகமக்ஷரம் பும்ஸாம் மஹாபாதகநாஶநம் ॥
caritaṃ raghunāthasya śatakoṭi pravistaram |
ekaikamakṣaraṃ puṃsāṃ mahāpātakanāśanam ||
The exploits of the Lord of the Raghus are vast beyond measure; each syllable of them destroys the greatest sins of men.

dhyātvā nīlotpalaśyāmaṃ rāmaṃ rājīvalocanam |
jānakīlakṣmaṇopetaṃ jaṭāmukuṭamaṇḍitam ||
Meditating on Rāma — dark as the blue lotus, lotus-eyed, flanked by Jānakī and Lakṣmaṇa, adorned with a diadem of matted locks —

Verse 7 — ஸாஸிதூணதநுர்பாணபாணிம் நக்தஞ்சராந்தகம் ।…

ஸாஸிதூணதநுர்பாணபாணிம் நக்தஞ்சராந்தகம் ।
ஸ்வலீலயா ஜகத்த்ராதுமாவிர்பூதமஜம் விபும் ॥
sāsitūṇadhanurbāṇapāṇiṃ naktañcarāntakam |
svalīlayā jagattrātumāvirbhūtamajaṃ vibhum ||
holding sword, quiver, bow and arrows in his hands, the destroyer of the night-stalkers, who by his own sport appeared to protect the world — the unborn, all-pervading Lord.

Verse 8 — ராமரக்ஷாம் படேத்ப்ராஜ்ஞஃ பாபக்நீம் ஸர்வகாமதாம்…

ராமரக்ஷாம் படேத்ப்ராஜ்ஞஃ பாபக்நீம் ஸர்வகாமதாம் ।
ஶிரோ மே ராகவஃ பாது பாலம் தஶரதாத்மஜஃ ॥
rāmarakṣāṃ paṭhetprājñaḥ pāpaghnīṃ sarvakāmadām |
śiro me rāghavaḥ pātu bhālaṃ daśarathātmajaḥ ||
May the wise one recite the Rāma Rakṣā, which destroys sin and grants all desires: may Rāghava protect my head; may Daśaratha's son protect my brow;

Verse 9 — கௌஸல்யேயோ த்ரு'ஶௌ பாது விஶ்வாமித்ரப்ரியஃ ஶ்ருதீ…

கௌஸல்யேயோ த்ரு'ஶௌ பாது விஶ்வாமித்ரப்ரியஃ ஶ்ருதீ ।
க்ராணம் பாது மகத்ராதா முகம் ஸௌமித்ரிவத்ஸலஃ ॥
kausalyeyo dṛśau pātu viśvāmitrapriyaḥ śrutī |
ghrāṇaṃ pātu makhatrātā mukhaṃ saumitrivatsalaḥ ||
may Kausalyā's son protect my eyes; may he who delights Viśvāmitra protect my ears; may the protector of the sacrifice protect my nose; may the one dear to Lakṣmaṇa protect my face.

ஜிஹ்வாம் வித்யாநிதிஃ பாது கண்டம் பரதவந்திதஃ ।
ஸ்கந்தௌ திவ்யாயுதஃ பாது புஜௌ பக்நேஶகார்முகஃ ॥
jihvāṃ vidyānidhiḥ pātu kaṇṭhaṃ bharatavanditaḥ |
skandhau divyāyudhaḥ pātu bhujau bhagneśakārmukaḥ ||
May the treasury of wisdom protect my tongue; may he whom Bharata worships protect my throat; may he of divine weapons protect my shoulders; may he who broke the bow of the enemy protect my arms.

Verse 11 — கரௌ ஸீதாபதிஃ பாது ஹ்ரு'தயம் ஜாமதக்ந்யஜித் ।…

கரௌ ஸீதாபதிஃ பாது ஹ்ரு'தயம் ஜாமதக்ந்யஜித் ।
மத்யம் பாது கரத்வம்ஸீ நாபிம் ஜாம்பவதாஶ்ரயஃ ॥
karau sītāpatiḥ pātu hṛdayaṃ jāmadagnyajit |
madhyaṃ pātu kharadhvaṃsī nābhiṃ jāmbavadāśrayaḥ ||
May Sītā's lord protect my hands; may the conqueror of the Jāmadagnya protect my heart; may the destroyer of Khara protect my waist; may the refuge of Jāmbavān protect my navel.

Verse 12 — ஸுக்ரீவேஶஃ கடீ பாது ஸக்திநீ ஹநுமத்ப்ரபுஃ । ஊரூ…

ஸுக்ரீவேஶஃ கடீ பாது ஸக்திநீ ஹநுமத்ப்ரபுஃ ।
ஊரூ ரகூத்தமஃ பாது ரக்ஷஃகுலவிநாஶக்ரு'த் ॥
sugrīveśaḥ kaṭī pātu sakthinī hanumatprabhuḥ |
ūrū raghūttamaḥ pātu rakṣaḥkulavināśakṛt ||
May the lord of Sugrīva protect my hips; may the master of Hanumān protect my thighs; may the best of the Raghus protect my thighs; may the destroyer of the rākṣasa race protect me all round.

Verse 13 — ஜாநுநீ ஸேதுக்ரு'த்பாது ஜங்கே தஶமுகாந்தகஃ । பாதௌ…

ஜாநுநீ ஸேதுக்ரு'த்பாது ஜங்கே தஶமுகாந்தகஃ ।
பாதௌ பிபீஷணஶ்ரீதஃ பாது ராமோऽகிலம் வபுஃ ॥
jānunī setukṛtpātu jaṅghe daśamukhāntakaḥ |
pādau bibhīṣaṇaśrīdaḥ pātu rāmo'khilaṃ vapuḥ ||
May the builder of the bridge protect my knees; may the slayer of the ten-faced Rāvaṇa protect my shanks; may the bestower of prosperity on Vibhīṣaṇa protect my feet; may Rāma protect my entire body.

Verse 14 — பாதாலபூதலவ்யோமசாரிணஶ்சத்மசாரிணஃ । ந த்ரஷ்டுமபி…

பாதாலபூதலவ்யோமசாரிணஶ்சத்மசாரிணஃ ।
ந த்ரஷ்டுமபி ஶக்தாஸ்தே ரக்ஷிதம் ராமநாமபிஃ ॥
pātālabhūtalavyomacāriṇaśchadmacāriṇaḥ |
na draṣṭumapi śaktāste rakṣitaṃ rāmanāmabhiḥ ||
Those who move in the nether worlds, on the earth and in the sky, and those who move by deception — they cannot even look upon one protected by the name of Rāma.

Verse 15 — ராமேதி ராமபத்ரேதி ராமசந்த்ரேதி வா ஸ்மரந் । நரோ…

ராமேதி ராமபத்ரேதி ராமசந்த்ரேதி வா ஸ்மரந் ।
நரோ ந லிப்யதே பாபைஃ புக்திம் முக்திம் ச விந்ததி ॥
rāmeti rāmabhadreti rāmacandreti vā smaran |
naro na lipyate pāpaiḥ bhuktiṃ muktiṃ ca vindati ||
Remembering 'Rāma', 'Rāmabhadra' or 'Rāmacandra', a man is not tainted by sins and attains both enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 16 — ஜகஜ்ஜைத்ரைகமந்த்ரேண ராமநாம்நாபிரக்ஷிதம் । யஃ…

ஜகஜ்ஜைத்ரைகமந்த்ரேண ராமநாம்நாபிரக்ஷிதம் ।
யஃ கண்டே தாரயேத்தஸ்ய கரஸ்தாஃ ஸர்வஸித்தயஃ ॥
jagajjaitraikamantreṇa rāmanāmnābhirakṣitam |
yaḥ kaṇṭhe dhārayettasya karasthāḥ sarvasiddhayaḥ ||
He who wears upon his neck the (amulet) protected by the world's single supreme mantra, the name of Rāma — all accomplishments come to his hand.

Verse 17 — வஜ்ரபஞ்ஜரநாமேதம் யோ ராமகவசம் ஸ்மரேத் ।…

வஜ்ரபஞ்ஜரநாமேதம் யோ ராமகவசம் ஸ்மரேத் ।
அவ்யாஹதாஜ்ஞஃ ஸர்வத்ர லபதே ஜயமங்கலம் ॥
vajrapañjaranāmedaṃ yo rāmakavacaṃ smaret |
avyāhatājñaḥ sarvatra labhate jayamaṅgalam ||
He who remembers this Rāma-kavaca called the Vajrapañjara (diamond cage) — unimpeded in command, he everywhere attains victory and auspiciousness.

Verse 18 — ஆதிஷ்டவாந் யதா ஸ்வப்நே ராமரக்ஷாமிமாம் ஹரஃ । ததா…

ஆதிஷ்டவாந் யதா ஸ்வப்நே ராமரக்ஷாமிமாம் ஹரஃ ।
ததா லிகிதவாந் ப்ராதஃ ப்ரபுத்தோ புதகௌஶிகஃ ॥
ādiṣṭavān yathā svapne rāmarakṣāmimāṃ haraḥ |
tathā likhitavān prātaḥ prabuddho budhakauśikaḥ ||
Just as Śiva commanded this Rāma Rakṣā in a dream, so did Budha Kauśika, upon waking, write it down at dawn.

Verse 19 — ஆராமஃ கல்பவ்ரு'க்ஷாணாம் விராமஃ ஸகலாபதாம் ।…

ஆராமஃ கல்பவ்ரு'க்ஷாணாம் விராமஃ ஸகலாபதாம் ।
அபிராமஸ்த்ரிலோகாநாம் ராமஃ ஶ்ரீமாந் ஸ நஃ ப்ரபுஃ ॥
ārāmaḥ kalpavṛkṣāṇāṃ virāmaḥ sakalāpadām |
abhirāmastrilokānāṃ rāmaḥ śrīmān sa naḥ prabhuḥ ||
He is the garden of the wish-fulfilling trees, the cessation of all calamities, the delight of the three worlds — may that glorious Rāma be our Lord.

Verse 20 — தருணௌ ரூபஸம்பந்நௌ ஸுகுமாரௌ மஹாபலௌ ।…

தருணௌ ரூபஸம்பந்நௌ ஸுகுமாரௌ மஹாபலௌ ।
புண்டரீகவிஶாலாக்ஷௌ சீரக்ரு'ஷ்ணாஜிநாம்பரௌ ॥
taruṇau rūpasampannau sukumārau mahābalau |
puṇḍarīkaviśālākṣau cīrakṛṣṇājināmbarau ||
Both youths, handsome in form, tender and immensely strong, with eyes wide as the lotus, wearing garments of bark and black antelope skin —

பலமூலாஶிநௌ தாந்தௌ தாபஸௌ ப்ரஹ்மசாரிணௌ ।
புத்ரௌ தஶரதஸ்யைதௌ ப்ராதரௌ ராமலக்ஷ்மணௌ ॥
phalamūlāśinau dāntau tāpasau brahmacāriṇau |
putrau daśarathasyaitau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ||
feeding on fruits and roots, self-controlled, ascetics and celibates — these two sons of Daśaratha, the brothers Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa,

Verse 22 — ஶரண்யௌ ஸர்வஸத்த்வாநாம் ஶ்ரேஷ்டௌ ஸர்வதநுஷ்மதாம்…

ஶரண்யௌ ஸர்வஸத்த்வாநாம் ஶ்ரேஷ்டௌ ஸர்வதநுஷ்மதாம் ।
ரக்ஷஃ குலநிஹந்தாரௌ த்ராயேதாம் நோ ரகூத்தமௌ ॥
śaraṇyau sarvasattvānāṃ śreṣṭhau sarvadhanuṣmatām |
rakṣaḥ kulanihantārau trāyetāṃ no raghūttamau ||
refuges of all beings, foremost of all archers, destroyers of the rākṣasa race — may the two best of the Raghus protect us.

rakṣaṇāya mama rāmalakṣmaṇāvagrataḥ pathi sadaiva gacchatām ||
Bows strung and ready, touching their arrows, their quivers filled with inexhaustible shafts — may Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa ever go before me on the path to protect me.

Verse 24 — ஸந்நத்தஃ கவசீ கட்கீ சாபபாணதரோ யுவா ।…

ஸந்நத்தஃ கவசீ கட்கீ சாபபாணதரோ யுவா ।
கச்சந்மநோரதோऽஸ்மாகம் ராமஃ பாது ஸலக்ஷ்மணஃ ॥
sannaddhaḥ kavacī khaḍgī cāpabāṇadharo yuvā |
gacchanmanoratho'smākaṃ rāmaḥ pātu salakṣmaṇaḥ ||
Armoured, girded with the sword, bearing bow and arrows, youthful, moving as my heart desires — may Rāma with Lakṣmaṇa protect us.

Verse 25 — ராமோ தாஶரதிஃ ஶூரோ லக்ஷ்மணாநுசரோ பலீ ।…

ராமோ தாஶரதிஃ ஶூரோ லக்ஷ்மணாநுசரோ பலீ ।
காகுத்ஸ்தஃ புருஷஃ பூர்ணஃ கௌஸல்யேயோ ரகூத்தமஃ ॥
rāmo dāśarathiḥ śūro lakṣmaṇānucaro balī |
kākutsthaḥ puruṣaḥ pūrṇaḥ kausalyeyo raghūttamaḥ ||
Rāma, son of Daśaratha, the hero, the strong one attended by Lakṣmaṇa, scion of Kakutstha, the complete Puruṣa, son of Kausalyā, best of the Raghus —

Verse 26 — வேதாந்தவேத்யோ யஜ்ஞேஶஃ புராணபுருஷோத்தமஃ ।…

வேதாந்தவேத்யோ யஜ்ஞேஶஃ புராணபுருஷோத்தமஃ ।
ஜாநகீவல்லபஃ ஶ்ரீமாந் அப்ரமேய பராக்ரமஃ ॥
vedāntavedyo yajñeśaḥ purāṇapuruṣottamaḥ |
jānakīvallabhaḥ śrīmān aprameya parākramaḥ ||
knowable through the Upaniṣads, lord of sacrifices, the supreme Puruṣa of the Purāṇas, beloved of Jānakī, glorious, of immeasurable valour.

Verse 27 — இத்யேதாநி ஜபந்நித்யம் மத்பக்தஃ ஶ்ரத்தயாந்விதஃ ।…

இத்யேதாநி ஜபந்நித்யம் மத்பக்தஃ ஶ்ரத்தயாந்விதஃ ।
அஶ்வமேதாதிகம் புண்யம் ஸம்ப்ராப்நோதி ந ஸம்ஶயஃ ॥
ityetāni japannityaṃ madbhaktaḥ śraddhayānvitaḥ |
aśvamedhādhikaṃ puṇyaṃ samprāpnoti na saṃśayaḥ ||
Reciting these names daily, my devotee, filled with faith, attains merit greater than the Aśvamedha sacrifice — of this there is no doubt.

Verse 28 — ராமம் தூர்வாதலஶ்யாமம் பத்மாக்ஷம் பீதவாஸஸம் ।…

ராமம் தூர்வாதலஶ்யாமம் பத்மாக்ஷம் பீதவாஸஸம் ।
ஸ்துவந்தி நாமபிர்திவ்யைஃ ந தே ஸம்ஸாரிணோ நராஃ ॥
rāmaṃ dūrvādalaśyāmaṃ padmākṣaṃ pītavāsasam |
stuvanti nāmabhirdivyaiḥ na te saṃsāriṇo narāḥ ||
Men who praise Rāma — dark as the dūrvā blade, lotus-eyed, clad in yellow — with his divine names are no longer bound to worldly existence.

Verse 29 — ராமம் லக்ஷ்மணபூர்வஜம் ரகுவரம் ஸீதாபதிம்…

ராமம் லக்ஷ்மணபூர்வஜம் ரகுவரம் ஸீதாபதிம் ஸுந்தரம் ।
காகுத்ஸ்தம் கருணார்ணவம் குணநிதிம் விப்ரப்ரியம் தார்மிகம் ।
ராஜேந்த்ரம் ஸத்யஸந்தம் தஶரததநயம் ஶ்யாமலம் ஶாந்தமூர்திம் ।
வந்தே லோகாபிராமம் ரகுகுலதிலகம் ராகவம் ராவணாரிம் ॥
rāmaṃ lakṣmaṇapūrvajaṃ raghuvaraṃ sītāpatiṃ sundaram |
kākutsthaṃ karuṇārṇavaṃ guṇanidhiṃ viprapriyaṃ dhārmikam |
rājendraṃ satyasandhaṃ daśarathatanayaṃ śyāmalaṃ śāntamūrtim |
vande lokābhirāmaṃ raghukulatilakaṃ rāghavaṃ rāvaṇārim ||
I bow to Rāma — elder brother of Lakṣmaṇa, best of the Raghus, lord of Sītā, the beautiful, scion of Kakutstha, ocean of compassion, treasury of virtues, dear to the wise, righteous; emperor, true to his pledge, son of Daśaratha, dark-hued, of tranquil form — the delight of all the worlds, ornament of the Raghu race, foe of Rāvaṇa.

ராமாய ராமபத்ராய ராமசந்த்ராய வேதஸே ।

rāmāya rāmabhadrāya rāmacandrāya vedhase |
raghunāthāya nāthāya sītāyāḥ pataye namaḥ ||
Obeisance to Rāma, to Rāmabhadra, to Rāmacandra, to the ordainer, to the lord of the Raghus, to the protector, to the lord of Sītā.
