Frequently asked questions

What is the Lingashtakam?

Liṅgāṣṭakam is a hymn of eight verses to the Śiva liṅga, composed by Ādi Śaṅkarācārya. Each stanza opens and closes in praise of the liṅga — "Brahma Murāri Surārcita Liṅgam", the liṅga worshipped by Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Indra — and the hymn closes with its phala-śruti, the promise of Śiva's presence to those who recite it.

What is the meaning of Brahma Murari Surarchita Lingam?

"Brahma Murāri Surārcita Liṅgam" is the opening of Liṅgāṣṭakam: the liṅga that Brahmā, Murāri (Viṣṇu) and the devas worship. It is the refrain repeated across the hymn's eight verses, each describing a different aspect of the liṅga.

Why is the Lingashtakam recited?

Liṅgāṣṭakam is traditionally recited as a daily hymn in Śiva worship, often in the morning or during Śivarātri. Its closing phala-śruti promises that one who recites it in Śiva's presence reaches Śivaloka, delighted, in the company of Śiva.
