Āditya Hṛdayam is a 31-verse hymn to Sūrya, the sun god, from the Yuddha Kāṇḍa of the Rāmāyaṇa. In the epic, the sage Agastya teaches it to Rāma on the eve of his final battle against Rāvaṇa.

When and where is the Aditya Hridayam recited?

The traditional time is at sunrise, facing the east, after bathing — a daily practice for many. In the Rāmāyaṇa it is recited before battle: Agastya gives it to Rāma at the moment he despairs, and its recitation restores his clarity and strength.

ಧಾರಯಾಮಾಸ ಸುಪ್ರೀತೋ ರಾಘವಃ ಪ್ರಯತಾತ್ಮವಾನ್

etacchrutvā mahātejā naṣṭaśoko'bhavattadā|
dhārayāmāsa suprīto rāghavaḥ prayatātmavān

Hearing this, the greatly radiant Rāghava was freed of grief; well pleased and self-composed, he took the hymn to heart.

Verse 30 — ಆದಿತ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಜಪ್ತ್ವಾ ತು ಪರಂ…

ಆದಿತ್ಯಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಜಪ್ತ್ವಾ ತು ಪರಂ ಹರ್ಷಮವಾಪ್ತವಾನ್।
ತ್ರಿರಾಚಮ್ಯ ಶುಚಿರ್ಭೂತ್ವಾ ಧನುರಾದಾಯ ವೀರ್ಯವಾನ್

ādityaṃ prekṣya japtvā tu paraṃ harṣamavāptavān|
trirācamya śucirbhūtvā dhanurādāya vīryavān

Gazing upon the Sun and reciting it, he attained supreme joy; thrice sipping water and made pure, the valorous one took up his bow.

Verse 31 — ರಾವಣಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಹೃಷ್ಟಾತ್ಮಾ ಯುದ್ಧಾಯ ಸಮುಪಾಗಮತ್।…

ರಾವಣಂ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಹೃಷ್ಟಾತ್ಮಾ ಯುದ್ಧಾಯ ಸಮುಪಾಗಮತ್।
ಸರ್ವಯತ್ನೇನ ಮಹತಾ ವಧೇ ತಸ್ಯ ಧೃತೋಽಭವತ್

rāvaṇaṃ prekṣya hṛṣṭātmā yuddhāya samupāgamat|
sarvayatnena mahatā vadhe tasya dhṛto'bhavat

Beholding Rāvaṇa, glad at heart, he advanced to battle, and with all his might resolved upon the demon’s slaying.

Verse 32 — ಅಥ ರವಿರವದನ್ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ರಾಮಂ ಮುದಿತಮನಾಃ ಪರಮಂ…

ಅಥ ರವಿರವದನ್ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ರಾಮಂ ಮುದಿತಮನಾಃ ಪರಮಂ ಪ್ರಹೃಷ್ಯಮಾಣಃ।
ನಿಶಿಚರಪತಿಸಂಕ್ಷಯಂ ವಿದಿತ್ವಾ ಸುರಗಣಮಧ್ಯಗತೋ ವಚಸ್ತ್ವರೇತಿ

atha raviravadannirīkṣya rāmaṃ muditamanāḥ paramaṃ prahṛṣyamāṇaḥ|
niśicarapatisaṃkṣayaṃ viditvā suragaṇamadhyagato vacastvareti

Then the Sun, gazing upon Rāma with gladdened, exultant heart and knowing the destruction of the night-wanderers’ lord to be near, stood amid the host of gods and said: “Make haste!”
