Salutations to Govinda, salutations to Govinda,

Verse 2 — ಗೋವಿಂದಾ ನಾರಾಯಣ

ಗೋವಿಂದಾ ನಾರಾಯಣ

goviṃdā nārāyaṇa

Govinda, Narayana!

Verse 3 — ಗೋವರ್ಧನ ಗಿರಿಯನೆತ್ತಿದ

ಗೋವರ್ಧನ ಗಿರಿಯನೆತ್ತಿದ

govardhana giriyanèttida

He who held aloft the Govardhana hill —

Verse 4 — ಗೋವಿಂದಾ ನಮ್ಮ ರಕ್ಷಿಸೋ

ಗೋವಿಂದಾ ನಮ್ಮ ರಕ್ಷಿಸೋ

goviṃdā namma rakṣiso

O Govinda, protect us!

Verse 5 — ಮಂಚ ಬಾರದು ಮಡದಿ ಬಾರಳು

ಮಂಚ ಬಾರದು ಮಡದಿ ಬಾರಳು

maṃca bāradu maḍadi bāral̤u

The bed will not come, nor will the wife,

Verse 6 — ಕಂಚು ಕನ್ನಡಿ ಬಾರದು

kaṃcu kannaḍi bāradu

neither the mirror of polished brass,

Verse 7 — ಸಂಚಿತಾರ್ಥದ ದ್ರವ್ಯ ಬಾರದು

saṃcitārthada dravya bāradu

nor the accumulated wealth —

Verse 8 — ಮುಂಚೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಧರ್ಮವೆ

ಮುಂಚೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಧರ್ಮವೆ

muṃcè māḍida dharmavè

only the merit of deeds done before.

When Yama's messengers drag one away,

neither wealth nor sons can save.

Verse 13 — ತಂದು ಬಂದರೆ ತನ್ನ ಪುರುಷನ

ತಂದು ಬಂದರೆ ತನ್ನ ಪುರುಷನ

taṃdu baṃdarè tanna puruṣana

When a woman's husband comes and takes her,

Verse 14 — ಹಸಿದು ಬಳಲಿದಿರೆಂಬಳು

ಹಸಿದು ಬಳಲಿದಿರೆಂಬಳು

hasidu bal̤alidirèṃbal̤u

she who was hungry and exhausted,

Verse 15 — ಒಂದು ದಿವಸವು ತಾರದಿದ್ದರೆ

ಒಂದು ದಿವಸವು ತಾರದಿದ್ದರೆ

òṃdu divasavu tāradiddarè

if she does not come for even one day,

Verse 16 — ಹಂದಿ ನಾಯಂತೆ ಕೆಲೆವಳು

ಹಂದಿ ನಾಯಂತೆ ಕೆಲೆವಳು

haṃdi nāyaṃtè kèlèval̤u

she is treated like a pig or a dog.

Verse 17 — ಪ್ರಾಣವಲ್ಲಭೆ ತನ್ನ ಪುರುಷನ

ಪ್ರಾಣವಲ್ಲಭೆ ತನ್ನ ಪುರುಷನ

prāṇavallabhè tanna puruṣana

The wife who is the breath of life,

Verse 18 — ಕಾಣದೆ ನಿಲ್ಲಲಾರಳು

ಕಾಣದೆ ನಿಲ್ಲಲಾರಳು

kāṇadè nillalāral̤u

cannot bear to be apart from her husband;

Verse 19 — ಪ್ರಾಣ ಹೋಗುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ

ಪ್ರಾಣ ಹೋಗುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ

prāṇa hoguva samayadalli

but at the moment the life departs,

Verse 20 — ಜಾಣೆ ಕರೆದರು ಬಾರಳು

ಜಾಣೆ ಕರೆದರು ಬಾರಳು

jāṇè karèdaru bāral̤u

even the clever woman will not come.

When times are good, relatives and friends

Verse 22 — ಬಂಟರಾಗಿ ಕಾಯ್ವರು

stand guard like soldiers;

kaṃṭaka yamanavaru èl̤èvāga

but when Yama's calamity pulls,

Verse 24 — ನೆಂಟರಿಷ್ಟರು ಬಾರರು

nèṃṭariṣṭaru bāraru

not one kinsman appears.

Verse 25 — ಒಡೆವೆ ಅರಸಿಗೆ ಒಡಲು ಅಗ್ನಿಗೆ

To the king the body belongs, to the fire the flesh,

when Yama's men beat and strike,

the tongue stumbles and falls silent.
