viṣṇuṣaṭpadī
The Ṣaṭpadī (six verses) to Viṣṇu — Ādi Śaṅkaraʼs prayer for refuge.

Verse 2 — ಅವಿನಯಮಪನಯ ವಿಷ್ಣೋ ದಮಯ ಮನಃ ಶಮಯ ವಿಷಯಮೃಗತೃಷ್ಣಾಂ ।

ಅವಿನಯಮಪನಯ ವಿಷ್ಣೋ ದಮಯ ಮನಃ ಶಮಯ ವಿಷಯಮೃಗತೃಷ್ಣಾಂ ।
avinayamapanaya viṣṇo damaya manaḥ śamaya viṣayamṛgatṛṣṇāṃ |
Take away my ill-breeding, O Viṣṇu; subdue my mind; quell the mirage-thirst for sense-objects;

Verse 3 — ಭೂತದಯಾಂ ವಿಸ್ತಾರಯ ತಾರಯ ಸಂಸಾರಸಾಗರತಃ

ಭೂತದಯಾಂ ವಿಸ್ತಾರಯ ತಾರಯ ಸಂಸಾರಸಾಗರತಃ
bhūtadayāṃ vistāraya tāraya saṃsārasāgarataḥ
widen compassion for all beings in me, and carry me across the ocean of birth-and-death.

Verse 4 — ದಿವ್ಯಧುನೀಮಕರಂದೇ ಪರಿಮಲಪರಿಭೋಗಸಚ್ಚಿದಾನಂದೇ ।

ದಿವ್ಯಧುನೀಮಕರಂದೇ ಪರಿಮಲಪರಿಭೋಗಸಚ್ಚಿದಾನಂದೇ ।
divyadhunīmakarande parimalaparibhogasaccidānande |
In the nectar of the divine river, in the being-consciousness-bliss savoured as fragrance,

Verse 5 — ಶ್ರೀಪತಿಪದಾರವಿಂದೇ ಭವಭಯಖೇದಚ್ಛಿದೇ ವಂದೇ

ಶ್ರೀಪತಿಪದಾರವಿಂದೇ ಭವಭಯಖೇದಚ್ಛಿದೇ ವಂದೇ
śrīpatipadāravinde bhavabhayakhedacchide vande
at the lotus feet of Lakṣmīʼs Lord, which sever the fear and grief of existence — I bow.

Verse 6 — ಸತ್ಯಪಿ ಭೇದಾಪಗಮೇ ನಾಥ ತವಾಹಂ ನ ಮಾಮಕೀನಸ್ತ್ವಂ ।

ಸತ್ಯಪಿ ಭೇದಾಪಗಮೇ ನಾಥ ತವಾಹಂ ನ ಮಾಮಕೀನಸ್ತ್ವಂ ।
satyapi bhedāpagame nātha tavāhaṃ na māmakīnastvaṃ |
Even when all difference is dissolved, O Lord, I am yours; you are never mine —

Verse 7 — ಸಾಮುದ್ರೋ ಹಿ ತರಂಗಃ ಕ್ವಚನ ಸಮುದ್ರೋ ನ ತಾರಂಗಃ

ಸಾಮುದ್ರೋ ಹಿ ತರಂಗಃ ಕ್ವಚನ ಸಮುದ್ರೋ ನ ತಾರಂಗಃ
sāmudro hi taraṅgaḥ kvacana samudro na tāraṅgaḥ
for the wave belongs to the sea; nowhere does the sea belong to the wave.

Verse 8 — ಉದ್ಧೃತನಗ ನಗಭಿದನುಜ ದನುಜಕುಲಾಮಿತ್ರ ಮಿತ್ರಶಶಿದೃಷ್ಟೇ ।

ಉದ್ಧೃತನಗ ನಗಭಿದನುಜ ದನುಜಕುಲಾಮಿತ್ರ ಮಿತ್ರಶಶಿದೃಷ್ಟೇ ।
uddhṛtanaga nagabhidanuja danujakulāmitra mitraśaśidṛṣṭe |
O lifter of the mountain, younger brother of Indra, foe of the demon race, whose eyes are the sun and moon,

Verse 9 — ದೃಷ್ಟೇ ಭವತಿ ಪ್ರಭವತಿ ನ ಭವತಿ ಕಿಂ ಭವತಿರಸ್ಕಾರಃ

ದೃಷ್ಟೇ ಭವತಿ ಪ್ರಭವತಿ ನ ಭವತಿ ಕಿಂ ಭವತಿರಸ್ಕಾರಃ
dṛṣṭe bhavati prabhavati na bhavati kiṃ bhavatiraskāraḥ
when you are beheld, does not all the worldʼs scorn cease to prevail?

Verse 10 — ಮತ್ಸ್ಯಾದಿಭಿರವತಾರೈರವತಾರವತಾಽವತಾ ಸದಾ ವಸುಧಾಂ ।

ಮತ್ಸ್ಯಾದಿಭಿರವತಾರೈರವತಾರವತಾಽವತಾ ಸದಾ ವಸುಧಾಂ ।
matsyādibhiravatārairavatāravatā'vatā sadā vasudhāṃ |
Through your avatars beginning with the Fish, you who descend have ever protected the earth;

Verse 11 — ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರ ಪರಿಪಾಲ್ಯೋ ಭವತಾ ಭವತಾಪಭೀತೋಽಹಂ

ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರ ಪರಿಪಾಲ್ಯೋ ಭವತಾ ಭವತಾಪಭೀತೋಽಹಂ
parameśvara paripālyo bhavatā bhavatāpabhīto'haṃ
O Supreme Lord, I, terrified by lifeʼs anguish, am one for you to protect.

Verse 12 — ದಾಮೋದರ ಗುಣಮಂದಿರ ಸುಂದರವದನಾರವಿಂದ ಗೋವಿಂದ ।

ದಾಮೋದರ ಗುಣಮಂದಿರ ಸುಂದರವದನಾರವಿಂದ ಗೋವಿಂದ ।
dāmodara guṇamandira sundaravadanāravinda govinda |
O Dāmodara, temple of all virtues, O lotus-faced, beautiful Govinda,

Verse 13 — ಭವಜಲಧಿಮಥನಮಂದರ ಪರಮಂ ದರಮಪನಯ ತ್ವಂ ಮೇ

ಭವಜಲಧಿಮಥನಮಂದರ ಪರಮಂ ದರಮಪನಯ ತ್ವಂ ಮೇ
bhavajaladhimathanamandara paramaṃ daramapanaya tvaṃ me
O Mandara that churns the ocean of existence, take away my deepest fear.

Verse 14 — ನಾರಾಯಣ ಕರುಣಾಮಯ ಶರಣಂ ಕರವಾಣಿ ತಾವಕೌ ಚರಣೌ ।

ನಾರಾಯಣ ಕರುಣಾಮಯ ಶರಣಂ ಕರವಾಣಿ ತಾವಕೌ ಚರಣೌ ।
nārāyaṇa karuṇāmaya śaraṇaṃ karavāṇi tāvakau caraṇau |
O compassionate Nārāyaṇa, I take refuge — I clasp your two feet.
